1 Corinthians 8:2 And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know. 3 But if any man love God, the same is known of him.
Knowledge and understanding leads us to "wisdom". This is a translation of the Greek word; Sophia, #4678 sof-ee' -ah and from 4680; meaning wisdom. Of all of them, it is this one the bible tells us to pray for and ask God for. James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
All of these are mentioned in proverbs 24:3-7; Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established:
4 And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.
5 A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength.
6 For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety.
7 ¶Wisdom is too high for a fool: he openeth not his mouth in the gate.
We know Proverbs as the book of wisdom among Solomon's writings (old testament) it is also said that James is the book of wisdom in the new testament. Note: Both point toward application and urges us to APPLY God's word to our lives. Jesus said this; Matthew 7:24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
.... And DOES them. Again in James 1:23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:
James 1:25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. All point us to application. See, we only hear wise man builds his house on a rock in Matt 7:24, that fits better in our fast paced society and 2 minute microwave mentality. Whereas, the first part of that verse; he who hears and does them, that involves effort on our part and puts the responsibility on us.
So do we really understand what it is saying? See, a gentle answer turns away wrath and a harsh one stirs it up and if a brother offended is harder to win than a city, then how can we win anyone by offending them with religion?
See now how it takes on more meaning and why we are encouraged to be doers of the word? We will throw that scripture at someone, but remember; Corinthians 8:2 And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know. In their context, they have a deeper value and content and direct us in attaining wisdom. It now is not a rule or religious duty or accusation hurled at someone in the wrong spirit. Remember, his yoke is easy and the burden light. If rightly divided and skillfully presented, the gospel of Jesus Christ will awaken a hunger within someone, not drive them away. The power is in the Seed!
