In the book of Numbers, Chapter 21, we read about God sending punishment to the Children of Israel. This punishment came in the form of poisonous serpents which bit many of the Israelites. The Lord, however, did provide a way of Salvation or cure to the poison venom of these serpents. He had Moses fashion a bronze serpent and raise it up on a pole so that anyone looking upon the serpent would be cured and live. Some read this story and don't think upon it fully.
The brazen (bronze) serpent on the pole foreshadows Jesus and his being lifted up on the cross of calvary. And just as Moses commanded the Israelites to look toward the serpent on the pole so they would live and not die from the bites of the serpents, so we are to look upon Jesus so we are cured of the poison of sin! The bronze serpent is what is called a Type, and Jesus is the Antitype of it. Jesus said in John 3:14- "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the Wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whosoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life."
Thank you for reading this short lesson on scriptural typology and Merry Christmas.
