Many Greeks Face Famine · July 09, 2012“The face of the crippling poverty gripping the country was plain to see as hundreds of poverty-stricken Greeks queued in a central Athens park for free vegetables.” With more than 22 percent unemployment, and little, if any social programs to bail them out, thousands of Greeks in Athens, both old and young, are queuing up for free food donated by farmers from Crete to help ease the devastating austerity faced by many Greeks. Cretan farmers handed out 2,700 10-kilo packages of fruit and vegetables.

The country has been struggling its fifth year of recession. The country “has been pulverized by pitiless [austerity] measures.” As more than four years of recession and dwindling incomes take their toll, tens of thousands of businesses have closed… and many Greeks see emigration as their only hope for a decent life.

After a difficult political struggle, the new Democratic Left says the coalition will ‘lift those measures that have literally bled society.’

The new government ends a political crisis that had “cast grave doubt over the country’s future in Europe’s joint currency and threatened to plunge Europe deeper into a financial crisis with global repercussions.”

New Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said “I will ask the new government… to work hard so that we can offer tangible hope to our people.”

Greece is a nation that has always had plenty of food. But because of the economic crisis, many Greeks face starvation. “Greece has been dependent on the loans from other Eurozone countries and the International Monetary Fund since May 2010. In return, it has imposed deep spending cuts, slashed salaries and pensions, and repeatedly hiked taxes. Many Greeks cannot afford to feed their families because of the deep austerity measures.

Jesus predicted that in the last days, there would be famine. It is not difficult to see that economic desperation can cause famine even in developed countries with a long history having much food. Economic difficulties can very quickly create a food crisis.
