Genesis 1:1-2 (King James Version)
{Genesis 1:1 (KJV)} In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
The only difference between the KJV and the NASB (1995 Update) is the plural of the word "heaven." The NASB uses this word in "plural" form--heavens. The NASB transliteration is from the word shamayim. It means heaven, sky. [NASB Greek-Hebrew Dictionary] Vine's lists it as Heavens.
Note that the statements made from AMG Complete Word Study Bible Notes seem to contradict our previous interpretation via word studies. This has been included to show you have various biblical authors view the same passages. It is not intended to confuse the serious student of the
Word.
Rather to educate you concerning your personal study notes. It is your responsibility to rightly divide the word of truth for yourself. If you become faithful to this, then when you read a commentary, dictionary, etc., a red flag will arise in your spirit. His purpose will help you to divide the truth from deceptive teachings. You have to be able to work this part of your biblical studies. If you do not have that guidance and direction, you will swallow up anything , and polluting your spirit. If the statement does not align itself with the 66 books of the Bible, cast it aside. Pray for true biblical understanding. Do not run with it claiming it to be a "new" revelation. Please heed these words.
masculine noun meaning sky, heaven, abode, firmament, air, stars. Although the word is plural or dual in form, it can be translated into English as singular or plural depending on the context. The word describes everything God made besides the earth: God made the heavens of the universe (Gen. 1:1; 14:19); the firmament or expanse which He created around the earth was named sky or heaven as well (Gen. 1:8). He stretched out the heavens (Isa. 40:22); creating them (Isa. 42:5; 45:18).
