111509 — HOME BIBLE FELLOWSHIP LESSON
This Home Bible Fellowship Lesson can be used by you to help start bringing the Church into your own home! You start by having your own personal devotions, then bring your experience into a family Home Bible Fellowship and then open the doors of your home by starting a neighborhood Home Bible Fellowship.
WHY BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE!
“WHY DOES IT SEEM THAT WHENEVER I STEP OUT FOR GOD…I GET ATTACKED!”
WORSHIP — Begin worshipping your Heavenly Father as your protector, your shield, your strong tower! He is the God that is mighty in battle! He is Jehovah Nissi … the LORD your victory!
Psalm 18:1-3 I love You fervently and devotedly, O Lord, my Strength. The Lord is my Rock, my Fortress, and my Deliver; my God, my keen and firm Strength in Whom I will trust and take refuge, my Shield, and the Horn of my salvation, my High Tower. I will call upon the Lord, Who is to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies.
WORD — We have all heard this before … “When I take a strong stand to grow in God, bad things start happening to me!” They continue by saying, “If God really loves me, why is He allowing this to happen! I feel like giving up! Where is God’s victory in all this! You ask."
1 Cor. 15:57-58 But thanks be to God, Who gives us the victory [making us conquerors] through our Lord Jesus Christ. [58] Therefore, my beloved brethren, be firm, (steadfast), immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord [always being superior, excelling, doing more than enough in the service of the Lord], knowing and being continually aware that your labor in the Lord is not futile [it is never wasted or to no purpose].
I. We are all living in the world, but we are not of it!
John 17:9-18 I am praying for them. I am not praying (requesting) for the world, but for those You have given Me, for they belong to You. [10] All [things that are] Mine are Yours, and all [things that are] Yours belong to Me; and I am glorified in (through) them. [They have done Me honor; in them My glory is achieved.] [11] And [now] I am no more in the world, but these are [still] in the world, and I am coming to You. Holy Father, keep in Your Name [in the knowledge of Yourself] those whom You have given Me, that they can be one as We [are one]. [12] While I was with them, I kept and preserved them in Your Name [in the knowledge and worship of You]. Those You have given Me I guarded and protected, and not one of them has perished or is lost except the son of perdition [Judas Iscariot-the one who is now doomed to destruction, destined to be lost], that the Scripture might be fulfilled. [13] And now I am coming to You; I say these things while I am still in the world, so that My joy will be made full and complete and perfect in them [that they can experience My delight fulfilled in them, that My enjoyment will be perfected in their own souls, that they will have My gladness within the, filling their hearts]. [14] I have given and delivered to them Your word (message) and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world [do not belong to the world], just as I am not of the world. [15] I do not ask that You will take them out of the world, but that You will keep and protect them from the evil one. [16] They are not of the world (worldly, belonging to the world), [just] as I am not of the world. [17] Sanctify them [purify, consecrate, separate them for Yourself, make them holy] by Truth; Your Word is Truth. [18] Just as You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. And so for their sake and on their sake and on their behalf I sanctify (dedicate, consecrate) Myself, that they also will be sanctified (dedicated, consecrated, made holy) in the Truth.
A. In the world we will have tribulation! However, we are not to be moved by it! We are to stand fast in faith!
John 16:33 I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace and confidence. In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident, certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.]
1 Thes. 3:2-8 And we sent Timothy, our brother and God’s servant in [spreading] the good news (the Gospel) of Christ, to strengthen and establish and to exhort and comfort and encourage you in your faith. [3] That no one [of you] should be disturbed and beguiled and led astray by these afflictions and difficulties [to which I have referred]. For you yourselves know that this is [unavoidable in our position, and must be recognized as] our appointed lot. [4] For even when we were with you, [you know] we warned you plainly beforehand that we were to be pressed with difficulties and made to suffer affliction, just as to your own knowledge it has [since] happened. [5] That is the reason that, when I could bear [the suspense] no longer, I sent that I might learn [how you were standing the strain, and the endurance of] your faith, [for I was fearful] lest somehow the tempter had tempted you and our toil [among you should prove to] be fruitless and to no purpose. [6] But now that Timothy has just come back to us from [his visit to] you and has brought us the good news of [the steadfastness of] you faith and [the warmth of your] love, and [reported] how kindly you cherish a constant and affectionate remembrance of us [and that you are] longing to see us as we [are to see] you. [7] Brethren, for this reason, in [spite of all] our stress and crushing difficulties we have been filled with comfort and cheer about you [because of] your faith (the leaning of your whole personality on God in complete trust and confidence). [8] Because now we [really] live, if you stand [firm] in the Lord.
B. Tribulation is the action of crushing something. It means grievous affliction or distress! Joseph experienced it!
Acts 7:9 And the patriarchs [Jacob’s sons], boiling with envy and hatred and anger, sold Joseph into slavery in Egypt; but God was with him, [10] And delivered him from all his distressing afflictions and won him goodwill and favor in the sight of the Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who made him governor over Egypt and all his house.
C. Tribulation comes to steal our faith stand in the Word!
Matt. 13:21 Yet it has no real root in him, but is temporary (inconstant, lasts but a little while); and when affliction or trouble or persecution comes on account of the Word, at once he is caused to stumble [he is repelled and begins to distrust and desert Him Whom he ought to trust and obey] and he falls away.
D. God does not send us tribulation! He delivers us from it!
Psalm 34:19 The eyes of the Lord are toward the [uncompromisingly] righteous and His ears are open to their cry.
*DISCUSSION QUESTION: Why do some believe God purposely allows evil to happen to us? Why do some get mad at God?
II. God never teaches us by directing bad things our way!
James 1:12-17 Blessed (happy, to be envied) is the man who is patient under trial and stands up under temptation, for when he has stood the test and been approved, he will receive [the victor’s] crown of life which God has promised to those who love Him. [13] Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted from God:” for God is incapable of being tempted by [what is] evil and He Himself tempts no one. [14] But every person is tempted when he is drawn away, enticed, and baited by his own evil desire (lust, passions). [15] Then the evil desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin, and sin, when it is fully matured, brings forth death. [16] Do not be misled, my beloved brethren. [17] Every good gift and every perfect (free, large, full) gift is from above; it comes down from the Father of all [that gives] light, in [the shining of] Whom there can be no variation [rising or setting] or shadow cast by His turning [as in an eclipse].
A. Bad things come our way through the work of Satan!
Luke 13:16 And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath day?
B. Bad things come our way just by having a physical body!
John 9:1-5 As He passed along; He noticed a man blind from his birth. [2] His disciples asked Him, Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he should be born blind. [3] Jesus answered, It was not that this man or his parents sinned, but he was born blind in order that the workings of God should be manifested (displayed and illustrated) in him. [4] We must work the works of Him Who sent Me and be busy with His business while it is daylight; night is coming on, when no man can work. [5] As long as I am in the world, I am the world’s Light.
C. Bad things come our way when we do not grow in the Word!
Hosea 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you [the priestly nation] have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you that you shall be no priest to Me; seeing you have forgotten the Law of your God, I will also forget your children.
D. Bad things come our way when we sow to our flesh!
Gal. 6:6-9 Let him who receives instruction in the Word [of God] share all good things with his teacher [contributing to his support]. [7] Let him who receives instruction in the Word [of God] share all good things with his teacher [contributing to his support]. Do not be deceived, deluded, and misled; God will not allow Himself to be sneered at (scorned, disdained, or mocked by mere pretensions or professions, or by His precepts being set aside). [He inevitably deludes himself who attempts to delude God.] For whatever a man sows, that and that only is what he will reap. [8] For he who sows to his own flesh (lower nature, sensuality {selfish}) will from the flesh reap decay, ruin, and destruction, but he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. [9] And let us not lose heart, grow weary, and faint in acting nobly and doing right, for in due time and the appointed season we shall reap, if we do not loosen and relax our courage and faint.
*DISCUSSION QUESTION: How does God help us when we are going through bad times? What does He send our way?
III. God provides a way of escape in your hour of trial!
2 Cor. 10:12-13 Not that we [have the nerve to] venture to class or [even to] compare ourselves with some who exalt themselves! However, when they measure themselves with themselves and compare themselves with another, they are without understanding and behave unwisely. [13] We, on the other hand, will not boast beyond our legitimate province and proper limit, but will keep within the limits [of our commission which] God has allotted us as our measuring line and which reaches and includes even you.
A. Escape! — Take time to watch and pray!
Luke 21:36 Keep awake then and watch at all times [be discreet, attentive, and ready], praying that you may have the full strength and ability and by accounted worth to escape all these things [taken together] that will take place, and to stand in the presence of the Son of Man.
B. Escape! — Listen to what He is saying! Do not neglect it!
Heb. 2:1-3 Since all this is true, we ought to pay much closer attention than ever to the truths that we have heard, lest in any way we drift past [them] and slip away {we doze off and fall asleep}. [2] For if the message given through angels [the Law spoken by them to Moses] was authentic, proved sure, every violation, and disobedience received an appropriate (just and adequate) penalty. [3] How shall we escape [appropriate retribution] if we neglect and refuse to pay attention to such a great salvation [as is now offered to us, letting it drift past us forever]? For it was declared at first by the Lord [Himself], and it was confirmed to us, proved to be real, and genuine by those who personally heard [Him speak]. [4] [Besides this evidence] it was also established and plainly endorsed by God. Who showed His approval of it by signs and wonders and various miraculous manifestations of [His] power and by imparting the gifts of the Holy Spirit [to the believers] according to His own will.
C. Escape! — Receive grace! Do not be shaken!
Heb. 12:25-29 So see to it you do not reject Him or refuse to listen to and heed Him Who is speaking [to you now]. For if they [the Israelites] did not escape when they refused to listen and heed Him Who warned and divinely instructed them [here] on earth [revealing with heavenly warnings His Will], how much less shall we escape if we reject and turn our backs on Him Who cautions and admonishes [us] from heaven? [26] Then [at Mount Sinai] His voice shook the earth, but now He has given a promise: “Yet once more I will shake and make tremble not only the earth but also the [starry] heavens.” [27] Now this expression, “Yet once more,” indicates the final removal and transformation of all [that can be] shaken — that is, of that which has been created — in order that what cannot be shaken may remain and continue. [28] Let us therefore, receiving a kingdom that is firm, stable, and cannot be shaken, offer to God pleasing service and acceptable worship, with modesty and pious {meaningful} care and godly fear and awe {respect}; [29] For our God [is indeed] a consuming fire.
Heb. 4:16 Let us then fearlessly, confidently, and boldly draw near to the throne of grace (the throne of God’s unmerited favor to us sinners), that we will receive mercy [for our failures] and find grace to help in good time for every need [appropriate help and well-timed help, coming just when we need it].
*DISCUSSION QUESTION: Why is it important to stay in the Word of God when you are under pressure?
Matt. 14:24-31 But the boat was by this time out on the sea, many furlongs [a furlong is one-eighth of a mile] distant from the land, beaten and tossed by the waves, for the wind was against them. [25] And in the fourth watch [between 3:00-6:00 a.m.] of the night, Jesus came to them, walking on the sea. [26] And when the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified and said, It is a ghost! And they screamed out with fright. [27] But instantly He spoke to them, saying, Take courage! I AM! Stop being afraid! [28] And Peter answered Him, Lord; if it is You, command me to come to You on the water. [29] He said, Come! So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water, and he came toward Jesus. [30] But when perceived and felt the strong of the wind, he was frightened, and as he began to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me [from death]! [31] Instantly Jesus reached out His hand and caught and held him, saying to him, O you of little faith, why did you doubt?
WORK OF GOD: Step into prayer rejoicing! The testing of your faith will prove as gold tried in a furnace of fire! God’s blessings are upon you!
The Pebble
Drop a pebble in the water: just a splash, and it is gone;
But there's half-a-hundred ripples circling on and on and on,
Spreading, spreading from the center, flowing on out to the sea.
And there is no way of telling where the end is going to be.
Drop a pebble in the water: in a minute you forget,
But there's little waves a-flowing, and there's ripples circling yet,
And those little waves a-flowing to a great big wave have grown;
You've disturbed a mighty river just by dropping in a stone.
Drop an unkind word, or careless: in a minute it is gone;
But there's half-a-hundred ripples circling on and on and on.
They keep spreading, spreading, spreading from the center as they go,
And there is no way to stop them, once you've started them to flow.
Drop an unkind word, or careless: in a minute you forget;
But there's little waves a-flowing, and there's ripples circling yet,
And perhaps in some sad heart a mighty wave of tears you've stirred,
And disturbed a life was happy ere you dropped that unkind word.
Drop a word of cheer and kindness: just a flash and it is gone;
But there's half-a-hundred ripples circling on and on and on,
Bearing hope and joy and comfort on each splashing, dashing wave
Till you wouldn't believe the volume of the one kind word you gave.
Drop a word of cheer and kindness: in a minute you forget;
But there's gladness still a-swelling, and there's joy circling yet,
And you've rolled a wave of comfort whose sweet music can be heard
Over miles and miles of water just by dropping one kind word.
