1 Samuel 18:1-4
And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul,
that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and
Jonathan loved him as his own soul. And Saul took him that day, and
would let him go no more home to his father's house. Then Jonathan
and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.
And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and
gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his
bow, and to his girdle.
1 Samuel 20:1-17
And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before
Jonathan, What have I done? what is mine iniquity? and what is my
sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life? And he said unto
him, God forbid; thou shalt not die: behold, my father will do
nothing either great or small, but that he will shew it me: and why
should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so. And David
sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have
found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not Jonathan know
this, lest he be grieved: but truly as the Lord liveth, and as thy
soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death. Then said
Jonathan unto David, Whatsoever thy soul desireth, I will even do
it for thee. And David said unto Jonathan, Behold, to morrow is the
new moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat: but
let me go, that I may hide myself in the field unto the third day
at even. If thy father at all miss me, then say, David earnestly
asked leave of me that he might run to Bethlehem his city: for
there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family. If he say
thus, It is well; thy servant shall have peace: but if he be very
wroth, then be sure that evil is determined by him. Therefore thou
shalt deal kindly with thy servant; for thou hast brought thy
servant into a covenant of the Lord with thee: notwithstanding, if
there be in me iniquity, slay me thyself; for why shouldest thou
bring me to thy father? And Jonathan said, Far be it from thee: for
if I knew certainly that evil were determined by my father to come
upon thee, then would not I tell it thee? Then said David to
Jonathan, Who shall tell me? or what if thy father answer thee
roughly? And Jonathan said unto David, Come, and let us go out into
the field. And they went out both of them into the field. And
Jonathan said unto David, O Lord God of Israel, when I have sounded
my father about to morrow any time, or the third day, and, behold,
if there be good toward David, and I then send not unto thee, and
shew it thee; The Lord do so and much more to Jonathan: but if it
please my father to do thee evil, then I will shew it thee, and
send thee away, that thou mayest go in peace: and the Lord be with
thee, as he hath been with my father. And thou shalt not only while
yet I live shew me the kindness of the Lord, that I die not: But
also thou shalt not cut off thy kindness from my house for ever:
no, not when the Lord hath cut off the enemies of David every one
from the face of the earth. So Jonathan made a covenant with the
house of David, saying, Let the Lord even require it at the hand of
David's enemies. And Jonathan caused David to swear again, because
he loved him: for he loved him as he loved his own soul.
Psalms 41:9
Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of
my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.
Proverbs 17:17
A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for
adversity.
Proverbs 18:24
A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a
friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
Proverbs 22:24
Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou
shalt not go:
Proverbs 27:6
Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are
deceitful.
Proverbs 27:10
Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; neither go
into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity: for better is
a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.
Proverbs 27:14
He that blesseth his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the
morning, it shall be counted a curse to him.
Proverbs 27:17
Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his
friend.
Ecclesiastes
4:9-12
Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their
labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe
to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to
help him up. Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but
how can one be warm alone? And if one prevail against him, two
shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly
broken.
Luke 11:5-10
And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall
go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three
loaves; For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I
have nothing to set before him? And he from within shall answer and
say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with
me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. I say unto you, Though he
will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because
of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.
And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye
shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one
that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that
knocketh it shall be opened.
John 15:13-15
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life
for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command
you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth
not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all
things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto
you.
